Hey Heterosexuals, Come Out of the Closet!

Yes, that’s right! Because it is so difficult for heterosexual people to find support, advocacy, and information about their sexuality, Texas has decided that if colleges or universities fund LGBT awareness programs, they must also provide an equivalent program that promotes “traditional moral values”. This means that if your school has an Ally or other diversity training, they will have to provide an equivalent program to train people about what it means to be straight. I mean, there are certainly no relationship models for straight people anywhere in pop culture, media, politics, academia, religion, business, or any other facet of society, so it is obvious that we need dedicated, focused outreach to really help educate Americans about what it means to be straight.

“Republican Representative Wayne Christian’s budget amendment was approved with a lopsided 110 to 24 vote, The Dallas Morning News reported. The amendment would force state colleges and universities using state funds to promote diversity programs based on sexuality or gender to spend an equal amount of money to promote “family and traditional values.”” Read the rest of the article.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

CALL FOR NOMINATIONS
(Columbus, OH) — NLA-International, a leading organization for activists in the pansexual leather community, is now accepting nominations for its annual writing awards for excellence in SM/leather/fetish writing for books, articles, novels, and short fiction first published between 1 January 2010 and 31 December 2010. The deadline for nominations is 31 January 2011. Winners will be announced on April 17 at the National Leather Association’s Annual General Meeting, which will be held during Spring Iniquity XX (April 15-17, 2011) in Houston, TX and mark the National Leather Association’s 25th anniversary. The five award categories are:

Non-Fiction Book (Geoff Mains Award)
Non-Fiction Article (Cynthia Slater Award)
Novel (Pauline Reage Award)
Short Fiction (John Preston Award)
Anthology (Samois Award)

Nominations for the Cynthia Slater Award (non-fiction article) may have appeared in print or online publications (which should indicate a specific date of publication). Eligibility for all other awards (short fiction, novel, non-fiction book, and anthology) requires print publication. If you or someone you know has published a book, article, or story dealing with any aspect of SM, leather, fetish, or kink sexuality please consider nominating it for one of the above awards. Authors and publishers are encouraged to nominate themselves by submitting copies of their work. Nominated works should foster education and promote awareness and a positive image of the leather/SM/fetish community. They should entertain and educate, while building awareness and tolerance of the community and showcasing the talents of its members. There are no submission fees, but the judges will require either three print copies of the nominated work or a digital copy (PDF). Nominations may be sent to the committee chair, Steve Vakesh, at: stevevakesh@gmail.com.

NLA-I has convened an award jury of nine readers, whose number include noted erotic writers and leading community activists. The judges are rotated regularly and their names withheld until after judging is complete to prevent lobbying by nominees. Last year they reviewed more than 100 submissions.

Now in their fourth year, the NLA-I’s writing awards have received widespread appreciation and support. A “leather first,” they have become the preeminent awards for SM, leather, and fetish writing. Past winners include Gloria Brame, Jack Fritscher, Lee “Bridgett” Harrington, Anneke Jacob, Jeff Mann, Jack Rinella, david stein, Cecilia Tan, Claire Thompson, and Alyson Tyler. NLA-I President Vince Andrews hopes that these awards will “continue to recognize, celebrate, and inspire the best in SM, leather, and fetish writing as the NLA celebrates its 25th anniversary.”

To good for bad puns

I was briefly tempted to make a  “Ho, ho, ho…” joke here, but no ounce of seasonal punage should distract from this awesome subject matter. I’ve watched it twice already and absorbed something new each time.

Kinky Sign Language workshop this Thursday!

Posted in Activism, Crazy/Funny, Stuff to do with tags , , on November 15, 2010 by girlonpiano
Join me this Thursday evening (11/18) for a FREE workshop where you’ll learn how to say all kinds of filthy sexy things in Sign Language!! That’s right, my Kinky Sign Language (KSL) workshop will be offered this Thursday at 7:30 pm at the Sanctuary, with no entrance fee! Here’s the deal:

A French documentary crew is working on a series called Sex Around the World, which features a series of hour-long tv programming focused on how sexuality is expressed in different cultures. The series will be shown on a French internet television station, and is intended for French-speaking audiences. I interviewed with them in New York, and they are coming to Dallas to film me teaching a workshop and to interview some other people and groups as well. My experience with them was very positive and they are very excited about getting some perspective into the American sex-positive movement. I see this as a great opportunity to be proactive about advocating for our rights as kinksters!

Attending this workshop DOES NOT mean that you consent to being filmed – the camera will be on me, not on the audience, and your attendance in no way obligates you to be part of the documentary. With that said, if you are interested in participating and you are willing to talk about your sexuality for a few minutes on camera, there are still a few interview spots available. The workshop will run from 7:30-8:30, and interviews will be conducted from 8:30-9:30 or so. If you want more information about the production company and their intentions, please email me and I’ll forward the relevant details.
I could definitely use your support in attending, since it will be awkward for me to teach this to an empty room 😀  This is a really fun workshop that I’ve presented at South Plains, the Femme Conference, and a couple of other places, and the response has been great. Please let me know if you have any questions, and please feel free to forward or repost!

Hope to see you there!
xoxo

Fight Fire… With Boobies!

Thanks, Huffpost, for the highlight of my day if not my whole adult life, ever!

How you like THEM apples, churchladies? Hrm... not so much apples as ... you know what, I got better places for my foot than my mouth.

When the local church down your street makes a point of protesting your gentlmen’s club all the time, take down people’s license plates, and stalk them with questions about “does your family know you come here?”, you could cower and close shop.

Or you, as a gainfully and legally employed individual can tell them to go to the same hell they think anyone but their narrowminded asses is headed for. My favorite part about this story is how sympathetic even some of the congregation is and brings the ladies cookies! Even the church further up the road thinks their brethren and sistren are outta line here.

One Battle Down and a War Yet to Win

This little witch just hopped off her broom after a trip to the 2010 Desiree Alliance conference in fabulous Las Vegas! If you’ve never been a sex positive person surrounded by hundreds of people of like mind and spirit, overflowing with love and the zeal of activism against the forces of oppression, then honey, you ain’t lived.

And maybe you don’t know, or think it’s buried under all the hatemongering out there, but there are MANY organizations in this great country working for the rights of consenting adults. You probably know the big ones like the ACLU, but do you know about HIPS? Do you know about the St. James Infirmary?

Can’t find a SWOP chapter near you to support? Then by hell start one. I am.

The fight is long, but we’re in it to win it. New Zealand managed to decriminalize, and they’re also winning against the misinformation campaigns, relying on hard evidence and the testimony of real sex workers.

But here, we often have to take the small victories as inspiration. So here’s one:

AVN reports that the federal government just lost its first obscenity trial in decades against porn icon John Stagliano.

The report tells the story in great detail, with good humor to boot, so my job is pretty much already done. Go read it and give thanks that perverts are still assured of their right to name themselves “Buttman” and film themselves doing filthy shit with tons of willing men and women for stacks of filthier money ❤ ❤ ❤
