Hey Heterosexuals, Come Out of the Closet!

Yes, that’s right! Because it is so difficult for heterosexual people to find support, advocacy, and information about their sexuality, Texas has decided that if colleges or universities fund LGBT awareness programs, they must also provide an equivalent program that promotes “traditional moral values”. This means that if your school has an Ally or other diversity training, they will have to provide an equivalent program to train people about what it means to be straight. I mean, there are certainly no relationship models for straight people anywhere in pop culture, media, politics, academia, religion, business, or any other facet of society, so it is obvious that we need dedicated, focused outreach to really help educate Americans about what it means to be straight.

“Republican Representative Wayne Christian’s budget amendment was approved with a lopsided 110 to 24 vote, The Dallas Morning News reported. The amendment would force state colleges and universities using state funds to promote diversity programs based on sexuality or gender to spend an equal amount of money to promote “family and traditional values.”” Read the rest of the article.

Raise a Solidarity Fist!

Canada did it!

Your source for emerging social justice, freedom from puritanism, and fucking awesome syrup

As reported in the Huffington Post, a Canadian court has struck down many of the key provisions that effectively rendered their supposed freedom to engage in prostitution meaningless. Yes the government plans on a repeal, and yes there is a 30 day waiting period before the decision can take effect, but solicitation and operating a brothel will soon likely be entirely legal!

The news is NOT perfect. We can very much expect the problems of pimps to remain in some form (they have also been legalized), and an abusive employer is an abusive employer in ANY industry. But this is why decriminalization is so important and so much better than “legalization”, which implies regulation of behavior that is implicitly dangerous. Decriminalization says you are completely free to make your own decisions on this matter. Sex workers may now report safely on bad johns and abusive pimps. This clearly motivated the court, as shown in their opinion, which we hope so very much to become common sense around the world, that the laws banning prostitution and the like only serve to further harm and marginalize a huge segment of all societies, condemning them to further victimization and no voice to protect themselves.

Go Canada! May we learn from example!

Fight Fire… With Boobies!

Thanks, Huffpost, for the highlight of my day if not my whole adult life, ever!

How you like THEM apples, churchladies? Hrm... not so much apples as ... you know what, I got better places for my foot than my mouth.

When the local church down your street makes a point of protesting your gentlmen’s club all the time, take down people’s license plates, and stalk them with questions about “does your family know you come here?”, you could cower and close shop.

Or you, as a gainfully and legally employed individual can tell them to go to the same hell they think anyone but their narrowminded asses is headed for. My favorite part about this story is how sympathetic even some of the congregation is and brings the ladies cookies! Even the church further up the road thinks their brethren and sistren are outta line here.

Down Low at West Point

This photo was taken in 1980, representing the first women to graduate from America's most prestigious and demanding military school

And here, 30 years later, another batch of students is making a difference at West Point. This time, as the New York Times reports, those cadets are gay, lesbian, or bisexual. Most are “on the down low”, but now, more and more are coming forward, and facing military “justice” for deciding that their oath of honor means more to them than keeping their true selves hidden from the bigots and fearmongers who prattle about combat readiness and moral hygiene.

As one such student, Katherine Miller put it, “I have lied to my classmates and compromised my integrity and my identity by adhering to existing military policy. I am unwilling to suppress an entire portion of my identity any longer.”

And these are the people we think we can afford to lose with so many enemies abroad?

One Battle Down and a War Yet to Win

This little witch just hopped off her broom after a trip to the 2010 Desiree Alliance conference in fabulous Las Vegas! If you’ve never been a sex positive person surrounded by hundreds of people of like mind and spirit, overflowing with love and the zeal of activism against the forces of oppression, then honey, you ain’t lived.

And maybe you don’t know, or think it’s buried under all the hatemongering out there, but there are MANY organizations in this great country working for the rights of consenting adults. You probably know the big ones like the ACLU, but do you know about HIPS? Do you know about the St. James Infirmary?

Can’t find a SWOP chapter near you to support? Then by hell start one. I am.

The fight is long, but we’re in it to win it. New Zealand managed to decriminalize, and they’re also winning against the misinformation campaigns, relying on hard evidence and the testimony of real sex workers.

But here, we often have to take the small victories as inspiration. So here’s one:

AVN reports that the federal government just lost its first obscenity trial in decades against porn icon John Stagliano.

The report tells the story in great detail, with good humor to boot, so my job is pretty much already done. Go read it and give thanks that perverts are still assured of their right to name themselves “Buttman” and film themselves doing filthy shit with tons of willing men and women for stacks of filthier money ❤ ❤ ❤

Facebook ’em

Gotta love social networking. It’s given us such important powers and privileges that we could never imagine living without. Consider what life would be like without bathroom photos of underage women who forget to flush the toilet behind their half nude bodies, things to stick captions on and render immortal as their fed to “FFFFFFFF” guy and Pedo Bear, and every horrible person you hoped to get away from after high school now able to stalk you.

I’m cynical perhaps. But with all these astonishing blessings, Facebook just happened to find another group of people to give an “extra special” privilege to.

Being banned for having pics up of a FtM’s post-operative chest on your account.

This story is blowing up across various blogs, but as near as I can tell comes first from VUE out of Edmonton. They report on the account ban against Dominic Scaia, after he posted pics of his naked chest on his profile. Anyone who’s even glanced at social network will know this is par for the course. Except, being a transsexual man, apparently, he still has a woman’s breasts according to Facebook’s moderators. Nevermind the expensive, painful, surgery he endured to remove them, they’re still there, no matter what, in the eyes of the “ew, ew, ew” crowd.

That alone is a kick in the teeth, but I ask another question. What makes all breasts pornographic anyway? Why can’t it be like the difference between, say, potential and kinetic energy? You know, tits at rest are potentially porn, but tits covered in chocolate and having the nips pulled between someone’s teeth are at “pornographic escape velocity”.

Sneaky Bastards

Censorship abounds! Two stories today, first from Carnal Nation, where Dr. Marty Klein reports on a law hidden deep within federal funding intended for the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, aid to Haiti, massive omnibus spending in general. The second from the Huffington Post, reporting on those old rascals at Apple, who no doubt have better things to do (like fix the iPhone) than scour the ‘Net for porn to cover up like a bunch of digital Keystone Cops.

For the nearsighted, that last line is a WAKE UP CALL TO DEFEND YOUR RIGHTS!

“None of the funds made available in this act may be used to maintain or establish a computer network unless such network blocks the viewing, downloading and exchanging of pornography,” is the teeny little evil addition reported on by Dr. Klein. Not to sound flippant, but just how fucking addicted are our “leaders” to collateral damage that they have to make so sweeping and casual an assault on our freedom of expression? Don’t they send enough unmanned drones to waste anyone with the misfortune of being near a suspected terrorist?

As for Apple’s contribution to the absurd, almost fetishistic compulsion to make people safe from porn, check here for just a tiny selection of some of the apps and e-books censored or outright denied distribution, because of the terrible sin of having “gay themes” or using the word “sperm”. That’s how Moby Dick’s electronic version wound up censored, believe it or not. My favorite has to be outright banning the Kama Sutra as thoroughly “obscene”. Well excuuuuuuuse a 6000 year old culture for having spiritual expressions that are sex positive and don’t conform to some kind of Silicon Valley Calvinism.

Get laid, people. Seriously. It helps.
